"" Organizations | The Clearing
The Clearing is a Quaker retreat center located in Amelia, Virginia. It is owned by Richmond Meeting, and used by Midlothian Meeting for our annual retreat and other activities. It is administered by a Clearing Committee which consists of representatives from Richmond and Midlothian meetings.

The Clearing is available for friends who want to hold meetings, retreats, or seminars in a natural setting. It consists of 75 acres of land adjacent to the Amelia Wildlife Management area in Amelia County, about 25 minutes southwest of the village of Midlothian. The land for the Clearing was donated by Louise Whittington, a long-time member of Richmond Meeting whose family still lives across the entrance to the Clearing.

The buildings at the Clearing consist of a lodge, with bathrooms, showers, a kitchen, and a small meeting room. Adjacent to the lodge is a sleeping cabin for overnight visitors who need indoor accommodations, and about 11 tent sites. Located a short walk from the lodge is a picnic pavilion with a large outdoor fireplace and picnic tables. This pavilion is at the heart of the clearing grassy area, which also contains a sandbox and volleyball area.

Hiking trails are also available, and begin behind the pavilion.

Reservations for use of the lodge, sleeping cabin, or pavilion should be made in advance to avoid conflicts. You can email the Clearing registration person to make your reservations, or visit their web site at www.theclearing.net.

"" Organizations | The Thrifty Quaker
Midlothian Friends Meeting operates a thrift store in the village of Midlothian called the Thrifty Quaker. The purpose of the Thrifty Quaker is to provide clothing, toys, furniture, and other thrift items to the public, and to use the profits after expenses to support local charities.

The Thrifty Quaker has its own web site, www.thriftyquaker.com.

"" Organizations | FriendShare
FriendShare is the name of a fund administered by Midlothian Meeting. The purpose of FriendShare is to provide one-time emergency assistance to individuals in need. FriendShare was developed as another way for Midlothian Meeting to support our community. It is not public assistance; grants are made only once.

For more information on FriendShare, contact the clerk of Peace and Social Action Committee, which administers the fund.

The Friends General Conference is one of the world's largest umbrella organizations for Quakers. Midlothian Friends Meeting, through Baltimore Yearly Meeting, participates in FGC. FGC holds an annual meeting that is a favorite vacation spot for some Midlothian Friends.

Friends Committee on National Legislation is the political voice of American Quakers. Located in Washington, DC, it acts as a Quaker lobby in the public interest. The Friends Committee on Commonwealth Legislation (FCCL) performs a similar function in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

FCNL seeks to bring the concerns, experiences and testimonies of the Religious Society of Friends to bear on policy decisions in the nation's capital.

American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker-based organization that is committed to social action consistent with Quaker beliefs. The AFSC, acting in behalf of Quakers, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947 for post WWII relief efforts in Germany, the only religious faith-based organization ever to receive the Nobel prize.
